"We would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and the students at the school for all the attention given to Nina, and we want to extend a special thank you for selecting the wonderful family that welcomed our daughter. Her stay in Basel could not have been better. She was embraced by a caring and attentive family, made friends, discovered new places, and even fell in love with skiing! We are certain that this experience was very important for her personal growth, and that she will cherish these memories forever."

Luciana and André, parents from Nina from ESB Rio de Janeiro who did an exchange at SIS Basel during January and February 2025:

"Sanah had a wonderful time at SIS Basel and with her host family. This experience will stay with Sanah for the rest of her life. She learnt a lot, enjoyed the lessons and the ski camp was simply the cherry on the cake. The teachers fully understood Sanah's situation regarding the new learning content and were always there to support her. This helpfulness motivated her to do her best. All in all, everything went smoothly with the exchange - whether it was the host family, ski camp, lunch or anything else. "

Frequently asked Questions

  • 0 Who can apply?

Students from Year 9 onwards can apply.

  • 1 What is the best Year Level to go on an exchange?

We recommend participating in an exchange before the final two years of school, as these years are dedicated to important exams.

However, if a student would like to go abroad in the past two years of school, shorter stays may be arranged during school holidays, as the academic calendar in Brazil differs from that of Germany and Switzerland.

For example, a student from Brazil could take part in a four to eight-week exchange during the January/February holidays in Brazil. And a student from Germany or Switzerland could consider a stay in Brazil during the summer holidays in July/August/September.

  • 2 What is the minimum and maximum length of the stay?

The duration of the exchange can range from one to six months, depending on the student's preference and the availability of host families.

  • 3 During which months will the exchange take place?

    For Students from Brazil:
If you are coming from Brazil to Germany or Switzerland, your exchange will take place between January and July of the year following your application. For example, if you apply by February 2025, your exchange will occur between January and July 2026.

For Students from Germany or Switzerland:
If you are coming from Germany or Switzerland to Brazil, your exchange will take place between August and December of the same year you submit your application. For example, if you apply by February 2025, your exchange will occur between August and December 2025.

  • 4 What happens if a student does not understand the language of instruction (e.g., German or Portuguese)?
    • It is part of the experience to be immersed into the country’s language. There is no requirement of knowing the local language prior to the exchange. Depending on the discipline, translations to English can be made and the overall tests are adapted.
  • 5 Where do I pay school fees during the time of the exchange?

Payments will continue to be made directly to the student’s originating school. There are no additional school fees for the host school.

  • 6 What are the costs?

Families are required to pay for the travel fees, a stipend for the host family, meals at the exchange school, along with any additional expenses such as excursions and educational trips. The insurance is to be taken care of the families. For further details, please contact your school secretary.
