I firmly believe that face-to-face, in-classroom, teacher-student interaction is the driving force of students’ learning! However, it cannot be denied that the digital era has aided effective teachers in enhancing their lessons, thereby augmenting students’ learning. When I purchased my first personal computer, in 1983, I quickly realised how inefficient I had been! With the help of this technology, my metacognition and organisational skills grew exponentially.
As Einstein stated, “I do not need to remember anything, I have lab assistants for that. My brain is not cluttered with useless information, so I can think more clearly.”
Technology has undoubtedly improved teaching creativity, efficiency, and record-keeping.
Empowering Language Learning through Technology
When it comes to bilingual education, Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) actively engages learners in constructing knowledge through meaningful interactions. For example, students have immediate access to translations and can listen to native speakers of the language they are striving to master. Bilingual students can also virtually experience cultural diversity via the digital world. With effective internet access in all schools, technology truly levels the learning playing field.
Teaching in a Digital World
However, teaching will never be entirely replaced by technology. Effective teachers instil values that foster lifelong learning. We are not virtual beings; we operate in real-time, allowing us to adapt, be flexible, and ultimately guide students on their academic journeys.
