Good Green Growing

As the SIS Friedrichshafen kindergarten team, we took the opportunity this year to focus on our Garden Project. Gardening with children is a wonderful and rewarding experience that can teach them valuable life lessons while providing numerous benefits in daily life. It is also a valuable investment in their bilingual education and personal development. Hands-on learning engages all the senses. Children can see, touch, smell, and even taste the fruits of their labour, fostering a deeper connection to the world around them.

From Seed to Sprout: Our Gardening Adventure

As a group, we discussed the various plants we would like to see growing and what could be planted that we could eat as well. Nutritional awareness, being brave enough to try new foods, healthy eating habits and being thankful for our food were also topics that we explored. Our children undertook planting some relatively easy-to-grow vegetables. In the chilly month of February, we started indoors by squishing fresh seeds of tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas, radishes, cucumbers, and tamarind plants into little recycled paper holders and watching them sprout. In April, once the weather had warmed, we transferred them outside.

Gardening is a delightful and fulfilling hobby that allows you to grow vegetables while contributing to long-term sustainability efforts, as well as learn about global impacts. It provides an opportunity to connect with the outdoors, basking in the warm embrace of the sunshine as you nurture the plants.

Cultivating Eco-Friendly Minds

Teaching children about environmental responsibility and sustainability is crucial for long-term success. Protecting and nurturing our environment and reaping the harvest rewards has proved to be an overall success this past year and we can only hope to do better as we move forward into the next school year. Gardening with children yields not only a bountiful garden but also a harvest of smiles, lifelong lessons and good memories.
